building a large six-story building facing Farmer

Street and connected to its older space on Burdick

Five sections of the Burdick street building became

"Mall Boutiques." These facades were replaced by a

sterile, box-like modern facade in the 1980s

J.W. Knapp Company, Lansing, Michigan

Looking like a yellow-and-blue ocean liner docked in the
middle of Michigan's capitol city, Knapps was housed
in one of the state's finest examples of art-deco design.

The store's striking exterior design was
often portrayed in advertising.

Knapp's interior as seen from the store's
extensive mezzanine.

In 1961, Knapps extended to Capitol Avenue by taking
over an exiting Pontiac dealership; the one-story
addition housed appliance, toy, and sporting
goods departments.

The oldest portion of Dayton's enormous store, on
the southwest corner of Nicollet and Seventh Street.
The original Radisson hotel can be seen to the
right of the store.

The store was expanded along Eighth Street in the
1930s and again in the 1950s, resulting in a massive,
twelve story block, crowned by the renowned
Sky Room restaurant.

The newer block presented an imposing face
on Nicollet Avenue.

The newer block closed a vista along Lasalle Avenue.
It began as a two-story parking garage which
eventually formed a base for the tall store building.

Donaldson's evolved over time; its modern, art-deco
front covered an ancient, 1884 fragment, while the large
neo-classical block was a vestige of an abortive
expansion plan of the 1920s.
