Northern Commercial, Anchorage, Alaska

Northern Commercial's Anchorage store was a well-
recognized landmark in the city until it was damaged
in the tragic Good Friday earthquake of 1964.

Northern Commercial operated from temporary
quarters until its new store was ready in 1970.

Northern Commerical's three stores were purchased
by Nordstrom in 1975.

The Broadway - Korrick's, Phoenix, Arizona

Korrick's original 3-story building was next to the
Dorris-Hayman building which housed its
competitor, Goldwater's, just visible to the left.
By the 1940s, the building was expanded to the east,
and gained a fourth floor.
Interior photo of Korrick's.

In 1957, a fifth and sixth floor was added,
and the whole store was thoroughly modernized.
Korrick's was the last holdout among local
department stores as downtown Phoenix
declined in the 1950s and 1960s, lasting
until 1966, by which time Goldwater's and
Diamonds had moved their flagship stores
to Park Central.

Diamond's, Phoenix, Arizona

Downtown Phoenix was once the shopping center of Phoenix, and
surprisingly declined during the 1950s as Phoenix grew. In addition
to three local department stores (Goldwater's, Korrick's, and Diamond's)
major branches of Sears, Montgomery Ward, and Penney's were
located on or near Washington Street.

Diamond's, so-named since its fiftieth anniversary in 1947,
was originally known as The Boston Store.

A 1941 view of the interior of Diamond's downtown store
shows the large main floor, mezzanine, and second floor.
